What Are The Foods To Be Avoided During Piles?

Piles are a widespread ailment that may affect men and women at any age. Women are more susceptible to piles during pregnancy as there is pressure from the growing uterus that restricts the blood flow to the pelvis. So, lifestyle factors and diets have a significant effect. Hence, a person suffering from piles has to be very careful about his diet, as following the wrong diet can lead to the formation of hard stool which further leads to unbearable pain at the time of bowel movements.

Dietary modifications play a vast role in minimizing the pain resulting due to piles and reducing the constipation hazards as it is one of the worst triggers for piles. Here are a few foods to be avoided when suffering from piles.

Dairy products

Products like milk and cheese promote constipation and make haemorrhoids worse. Dairy products do not cause constipation on their own but contribute to constipation discomfort during haemorrhoid outbreaks. Dairy also causes gas production, which can contribute to pain and cramping if already constipated. Some research proves heavy dairy consumption can lead to the accumulation of bulk called “soaps” which contribute to constipation and more hardened stool. Soaps occur as fatty acids in the intestines bind to calcium deposits from the diary.

Spicy foods

Spicy foods or any other food you know will cause diarrhoea or constipation, should be avoided. Even if you are usually able to handle food with a kick, sometimes it pays to stick with more mild foods just in case. A bad case of diarrhoea can set you back and make haemorrhoid symptoms worse.

Deep-fried foods

Deep-fried foods are typically cooked in vegetable oils which are highly inflaming and can cause damage to the intestinal walls. The damage can make haemorrhoids larger and more painful. Although deep-frying foods now and then probably won’t damage your health permanently, during haemorrhoid, you should avoid fried foods. Deep-fried foods are also heavy and hard to digest.

Processed foods

Foods that have been canned, frozen, packaged or changed in nutritional composition by fortifying, preserving or preparing in different ways are said to be processed. Under this category are included canned food, lunch meals and ready to eat packed foods. These foods such as sausages and other cold cuts are low in fibre and high in sodium, increasing the risk of constipation. Sodium is added to foods for flavour and as part of some food preservatives and additives. On the other hand, processed foods such as bottled juices, syrups and jams are high in sugar content which are equally harmful for digestion and easy bowel movement.

Unripe fruits

Fruits serve as a saviour when it comes to improving symptoms of piles. However, please check that you are consuming ripe fruit. Unripe fruits, like unripe bananas, may contain some constipating or irritating compounds which can increase the pain and suffering. Include ripe fruits as part of your midmeal routine.

Salty foods

Watch the amount of salt you eat. It can lead to your body hanging on to water, which puts more pressure on your blood vessels. That includes the veins in your bottom that cause haemorrhoids.
